Helping Schools in the Gulf Still Recovering From Katrina...

SeaComm is helping to coordinate an effort by local students and Elks Club members to collect school supplies and transport them to Gulfport, Mississippi. The goal is to help restock schools there that are still short of supplies.
It all started when two groups individually approached SeaComm Marketing Director, Jerry Manor, with plans to help schools in the Gulf that were hard hit by Katrina.
A Massena High School Student, Jake Witkop, and his mom, Maryann, were planning to collect all the abandoned items that students discarded at the end of the school year. Last year they collected a pickup load and sent it to Central America through a charity in Plattsburgh. This year they wanted to help schools in the Gulf region and were searching for some way to get the items there. They had enlisted several other schools and were hoping to collect even more this year. They wanted to know if Jerry could help.
Jerry had been talking to several of his fellow Elks Club members who had been to the Gulf to volunteer their services in rebuilding the region through a charity in Syracuse. This charity had secured a tractor trailor and was planning to collect school items to bring down to the Gulf when they went down to work in July. They asked if SeaComm could serve as a drop off site for items from the public.
Jerry got the two groups together, the PTA got involved and more schools came on board. With the combined effort, North Country communities will be sending lots of supplies from St. Lawrence County down to Gulfport.
In support of North Country Veterans...

Member Service Representative Sheila Hargrave
Bombay member Tim Boulais went home with a new combination mountain bike/road bike donated by Fredericks Bikes, Sports and Blades in Malone after his ticket was drawn in a recent SeaComm raffle.
The tellers and member service representatives at SeaComm's main office are working all year to raise money for the Veteran's Clinic in Massena and the AMVETS bus that transports veterans to the VA hospital in Syracuse. Between the bike raffle and a food sale held earlier this year, the credit union employees are off to a good start, raising just over $2000 with the two events. Events still to come this year include a bottle drive and spaghetti dinner.
SeaComm member service representative Sheila Hargrave would also like to remind area residents to bring in pictures of family members serving in the military so they can be placed on the Veteran's Wall of Fame at the main office.
